Still better than Canon or Nikon? This lens remains popular as an exceptional third-party lens for Nikon and Canon DSLRs. First introduced in 2006, the model was only recently replaced by the AT-Xi in 2019. It has received consistent stellar ratings from reviewers during all that time. When it was first introduced, the Tokina AT-X M100 Pro D Macro was considered BETTER than its Nikon and Canon counterparts. Nikon and Canon have since upped their game on macros but at twice the cost of the Tokina. Although a bit slow on auto-focus, my experience shooting with it so far has been extremely positive. It is super-sharp, ergonomically comfortable to use and renders excellent color fidelity. It may no longer be “better” than a comparable Nikon or Canon lens, but it won’t disappoint the budget-minded photographer.
