Positives:

1. Exceptional build quality: I was blown away by the robustness of this lens. It feels solid and well-built, with no wobbles or loose parts.
2. Excellent sharpness: The lens produces extremely sharp images across all focal lengths, even when used wide open.
3. Bright aperture: With a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8, the lens is great for low-light photography and creating shallow depth-of-field effects.
4. Fast autofocus: The lens autofocuses quickly and accurately, making it useful for capturing fast-moving subjects.
5. Value for money: Compared to other lenses in its class, the Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.8 AT-X is significantly cheaper, making it a great investment for budget-conscious photographers.

Negatives:

1. Heavy and bulky: The lens is quite heavy and bulky, which can make it difficult to carry around for extended periods.
2. Limited zoom range: With a zoom range of only 28-70mm, the lens may not be suitable for some types of photography, such as landscape or wildlife.

Conclusion:

Overall, the Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.8 AT-X camera lens is an excellent product that offers outstanding value for money. It’s built to last, produces high-quality images, and is significantly cheaper than other lenses in its class. However, its weight and limited zoom range may be a consideration for some photographers. heavy lens that can get sharp shots, well built, No its not a 2.8 nikon…. THIS IS A NICE FX LENS.NO ITS NOT A NIKON BUT IF YOU WORK OUT WHAT IS BEST settings for SHARP THEN ITS GREAT.iM USING IT ON A D600 AND D2HS.SO FAR THE BEST IS F11 ON THE D2HS AND THE D600 LIKES JUST ABOUT ALL SETTINGS.MINE IS NOT THE SV MODEL I BOUGHT THE ONE WITH THE SCREW IN HOOD NOT THE BAYONET MODELS.I PAID 250 AND HAVE SEEN THEM CHEAPER BUT THIS WAS PRISTINE.BUILT LIKE A TANK.FEELS GOOD ON THE D2HS WELL BALANCED.With the 1.5 crop on dx its a handy 2.8 roughly 45-100 .on the d600 its a little front heavy.transition from auto to manual is a easy push pull motion.this web page says it all.yes id rather have the equivalent nikon but its out of my range.good accurate focus.

Great all around lens that covers a wide variety of shooting needs! I bought this lens as a new hobbyist/photographer wanting more versatility than my kit lenses provided. Just love it. It is now my GO TO lens. I love being able to blow out the background a bit by using a wider aperture than my other lenses allowed but being able to also change depth of field and shoot other situations without changing lenses. Works fabulously with my Nikon D70. Since my camera’s a little older, I wasn’t certain the auto focus would work on this Tokina, but it works beautifully! Couldn’t be happier.

This is a great portrait lens This is the version that’s based on the Angenieux optical formula that Tokina purchased. You can pick it out from the rest of the Tokina 28-70 PRO AT-X lenses from the screw on lens hood. Most of the reviews I read claim that it is super-sharp, even wide open, and I wanted a medium zoom lens with an f2.8 aperture.

I was initially disappointed with the one I bought, as it seemed very soft overall. After testing for a few days, I find that this lens is nicely sharp in the middle, with f4 and greater, the edges tend to be a bit soft at most f stops (but you shouldn’t have details in corners anyway). Mine also has a pretty strong ghosting/flare when it’s at 2.8 and shooting a high contrast subject, which seems to go away by f4. I tried it for landscape photos, and it’s actually terrible until you get up to about f11, otherwise the ghosting makes for very low contrast photos. This is why my first impressions were disappointing, I was using it for the wrong subject.

I think the best part is the smoothness of the out of focus parts of the image (bokeh). When shooting subjects against an interesting background at f2.8-4, the background is dreamy smooth, and the highlights are nice circular spots. It makes for some interesting glare spots, and with a high fstop, if makes decent stars.

All these put together makes for a wonderful portrait lens, or close up work (but not highly sharp macro) where you want the background smoothed out and beautiful.

great on my fs100 I bought this lens on a whim to use with a Sony Fs100. I previously tried using a Nikon 28-70 and had kind of poor results shooting video with it (some still lens are workable and some are not). Yet this is a great lens, much better results that the nikon. Eventhough it has a really short focal pull (maybe 90 degrees or so), but I have had no trouble with it at all. Very little breath, minimal telescoping when zooming, make it a lovely lens for video. My go to if I need run light. well worth the money.
