Tamron AF 80-210mm f/4.5-5.6 278D

(6 customer reviews)

The lens has a range of 80-210mm, which is great for capturing distant subjects. It can be used with both autofocus and manual focus, providing flexibility for the user. The lens has multiple elements, which help to reduce distortion and improve image quality. It also has lens coating, which helps to reduce glare and improve contrast. The lens has a variable aperture, which means that the maximum aperture changes depending on the focal length. The build quality is good, and the lens is sturdy and durable. The resolution of the lens is decent, and it can produce sharp images. The lens was manufactured some time ago, so it may not be as readily available as newer lenses. Overall, the Tamron AF 80-210mm f/4.5-5.6 278D lens is a good option for those looking for an affordable telephoto zoom lens with decent image quality.

Positives:
– Affordable price: The Tamron AF 80-210mm f/4.5-5.6 278D is a great budget-friendly zoom lens option for beginner and enthusiast photographers.
– Lightweight and compact: This lens is easy to carry around and doesn’t take up much space in your camera bag.
– Good image quality: While it’s not the sharpest or fastest lens out there, it still produces solid images with decent color accuracy and contrast.
– Versatile zoom range: The 80-210mm focal length provides a good range for shooting portraits, landscapes, and wildlife.
– Built-in macro capability: The lens has a close focusing distance of 1.3m and 1:4 macro magnification, which is a nice bonus feature.

Negatives:
– Slow maximum aperture: At f/5.6, this lens isn’t great for low-light photography or creating a shallow depth of field.
– No image stabilization: This can be a drawback for some photographers who rely on this feature for shooting handheld in low-light situations.
– Noisy autofocus: The autofocus is quite loud and can be a distraction if you’re shooting in quiet environments.
– Plastic build: While the lens is lightweight, it also feels a bit cheap due to its plastic construction.

Conclusion:
Overall, the Tamron AF 80-210mm f/4.5-5.6 278D is a decent option for those on a tight budget looking for a versatile zoom lens with built-in macro functionality. While it has some drawbacks such as slow autofocus and a plastic build, it still delivers solid image quality for its price point. There’s a reason it’s cheap… The mechanics of this lens are great–very smooth and quick. It’s a big lens, too, but is nicely weighted.

Sadly, the optics just aren’t that great. At the 90mm end, it’s not so bad, but when you get out to 300, image clarity drops considerably, and the chromatic aberrations are very noticeable. I’d say the latter is probably on par with most kit lenses.

Is it a terrible lens? No. But, if you’re looking to do some shooting from a distance, and image clarity is important, you should pass on this one.

Attached image was taken handheld with a Sony A58, ISO 3200, f/5.6, 1/125s. Subject was in the shade during early evening on a sunny and clear day.
