It is designed to take sharp and detailed close-up photos of small objects, making it an ideal choice for macro photography. The lens has a wide aperture, which allows for a shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh. It has an autofocus feature that ensures fast and accurate focusing, but it also has a manual focus option for more precise control. The guy who is good at what he does, but is often over-looked The Good:

Image Quality: If you wanted a lens that fully utilizes the sharpness aspect of your a7 bodies, look no further. This lens, in my opinion, is the sharpest native lens for the e-mount if focused correctly (yes, that does include the notorious 55mm). Distortion? Virtually none and very little chromatic aberration.

Surprisingly good portraits: The lens, for which it was intended – a macro-purpose, is one of the best in its class (if not the best) can also be doubled as a portrait lens. Although, I find that for bokeh purposes, it does produce onion ring bokeh at its largest aperture (which can be fixed at smaller apertures).

Build Quality: The build is mostly plastic, but does not feel cheap. You’ll be thankful for this feature if you’re using it for a good amount of time. For it’s size, it was a lot lighter than I was expecting. It has a push/pull zoom that switches from AF to MF which feel really nice to use – allowing you to focus with AF and instantly switching to MF for a more precise focus.

    The Bad:

Size and Weight : Although it is well built, some have complained about it’s size, especially with the lens hood on (I find it comfortable for my taste, but I won’t disagree, it is larger than the other prime lenses). If you’ve used smaller e-mount lenses, you’ll notice that this lens is on the heavier side at a little over a pound.

Autofocus: the AF is tricky to use with this lens, as it does come with an extra control slider. I find this useful as you can change the setting for different uses ( I’m a manual person). Does it AF quickly when used at the right setting? It can be. I do find that the AF does hunt sometimes – which leads many to review this aspect of the lens to be mixed.

Simply amazing This lens is by many considered to be the sharpest lens ever produced, regardless of manufacturer. I cannot vouch for that, but it is tack sharp and the photos are amazing.

As a Macro lens it is also amazing, and a tripod is highly recommended with this lens. It has amazing bokeh, but at f 2.8 the depth of field – meaning the part of the photo that is clear – is often too shallow. As an example, if the center of a flower is sharp, the petals often aren’t. So I find myself shooting at f11 or higher to get the needed depth, which again causes higher exposure times.

I don’t think this is something particular for this lens, just something you have to bear in mind with Macro lenses. So this isn’t negative, just something to be aware of.

Amongst the “pro” lenses it’s relatively light, although none of the pro lenses are exacty lightweight.

It is also an amazing portrait lens, and for that matter general purpose lens. 90 mm is an excellent choice.

    I highly recommend this lens.

Sony 90mm Macro E-Mount / Tack Sharp! Sony 90mm Macro, very sharp images, nice balance and handling on A7fRIII body. 90mm. focal ls just right for flowers, portraits, etc. Just wished all Sony lenses were this sharp! Good value for money as this lens seems to be somewhat of a sleeper due to being a prime and 90mm focal length. But boy does it ever take some tack sharp images! If you have a need for a Macro lens this one is excellent and does double duty as a great portrait lens.

Great macro lens This Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 macro is very easy to focus accurately. The clutch to switch from AF to MF is very handy as I find I can get extremely sharp by first using AF, pulling the clutch, and then tweaking the focus in MF.
