Sigma DG 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO

(4 customer reviews)

It has a range of focal length from 170mm to 500mm, making it a great choice for wildlife and sports photography. The lens is made up of 13 elements in 11 groups, including one Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element to reduce chromatic aberration. The lens also has a multi-layer lens coating to reduce ghosting and flare.

The lens can be used in both autofocus and manual focus modes, giving you more control over your shots. The build quality of the lens is good, making it durable and long-lasting.

The bokeh or background blur of the lens is decent, but not the best in its class. The aperture ranges from f/5 to f/6.3, which is not very wide, but can still produce good results in bright conditions.

The manufacturing time of the lens is not specified, but it has been around for a while and is still a popular choice for photographers. The resolution of the lens is good, but not as sharp as some of its more expensive alternatives.

Overall, the Sigma DG 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO lens is a good choice for photographers looking for a super telephoto zoom lens with decent optics and build quality.

Sure, I’d be happy to enrich this review of the Sigma DG 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO camera lens:

Positives:

This lens offers an incredible range for its cost, making it an excellent option for a photographer on a budget who is looking to shoot wildlife or sports at a distance. It also has a solid build quality, with a weight that feels substantial in the hand. Despite some of its flaws, it still manages to produce relatively sharp images at f/8 and above, and the APO (Apochromatic) design helps minimize chromatic aberration.

Negatives:

One of the main drawbacks of this lens is that it can be quite soft at its widest aperture, especially on the longer end of the zoom range. Additionally, the autofocus system can be slower than other, more expensive lenses, which may cause some frustration for photographers who shoot fast-moving subjects. Lastly, the lens can sometimes struggle to produce contrasty images, which may require some post-processing to fix.

Conclusion:

Overall, the Sigma DG 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO is an excellent lens for the price, offering a fantastic range and a solid build quality. While it may have some flaws, these are relatively minor compared to the lens’s overall capabilities. So if you’re a photographer on a budget who’s looking for a versatile telephoto lens, this could be a great option to consider.

Optical design

Has 9 aperture blades, with this amount of aperture blades you will be satisfied with the result. Not the best in low light conditions but the lack of high aperture can be compensated with higher iso

Physical characteristics

232 mm long, with this size carry only if you use it. With a lens filter diameter of 86 mm finding lens filters in this range can be expensive consider using Cokin P system if you really need one. Weights 1345 grams so it is a heavy lens, consider using its own lens bag.

Excellent Lens for the Range and Cost! Excellent lens for the range and price point, hard to beat it! It has its faults, like a little softer wide open on the long end, not as contrasty as more expensive lenses, and a slower AF (but not too slow). But it gives an excellent focal range for shooting in decent lighting conditions. I love mine!

Great deal for a low budget This glass is a great deal for it price. I’m an amateur photographer and love wildlife photography (specially avian). With this glass I get great images and enjoy every minute of it. I have a Nikon D5000, and although the glass is not fully functional (AF) with it, I’m practicing allot and saving battery power. I’ve found out (with my other lenses) that AF-S (photographing birds) have many problems focusing, stole time for great shots and eat my battery.
