Sigma DG 105mm f/2.8 EX OS HSM Macro

(7 customer reviews)

The Sigma DG 105mm f/2.8 EX OS HSM Macro is a high-quality camera glass that can focus on small objects and produce a sharp and clear image. It has a fast aperture value and 9 aperture blades that create a pleasing bokeh effect. The lens can be used with autofocus or manual focus and has a ring-type ultrasonic motor that provides quick and silent focusing. The lens is 126mm long and weighs 725 grams, making it a heavy lens that requires consideration when carrying it in a camera bag. It has a 62mm lens filter diameter, which is not commonly used, but step-up rings can be used to adapt it to other filter sizes. The lens is made with high-quality lens elements and lens coating that ensures a high resolution image. It is a well-built lens that can last for a long time.

Positives:
The Sigma DG 105mm f/2.8 EX OS HSM Macro camera lens is everything I was looking for in a macro lens. It’s incredibly solid and well-built, and it feels great in my hands. The OS (optical stabilization) feature is a game-changer for me, making it much easier to capture sharp images.

The controls on this lens are well-designed and easy to reach and use. The focus ring is smooth and precise, and it’s easy to switch between manual and autofocus. The 105mm focal length provides excellent compression and bokeh, making for beautiful macro shots.

Negatives:
One slight drawback of this lens is its weight. It’s definitely on the heavier side, which might make it a bit difficult to carry around for extended periods. However, given the build quality and optical performance, I think it’s a reasonable compromise.

Another minor issue is that the lens hood can be a bit tricky to attach and detach. This is a small complaint, but worth mentioning.

Conclusion:
Overall, I’m extremely pleased with the Sigma DG 105mm f/2.8 EX OS HSM Macro camera lens. It’s a high-end lens that delivers on all fronts, from build quality to optical performance to usability. The addition of OS is a significant advantage, and the controls are well-designed. While it may be a bit heavy, I think it’s worth the tradeoff for the image quality and overall durability. Highly recommended for macro photographers who want the best performance from their lenses.

Optical design

It is a ring-type ultrasonic motor designed to provide quick and silent focusing. Thanks to the macro capabilities this lens can make tiny things look big. Has 9 aperture blades, with this amount of aperture blades you will be satisfied with the result. Bright lens thanks to the high aperture value

Physical characteristics

126 mm long, requires consideration if you want to carry in the camera bag. With a lens filter diameter of 62 mm you are one step from the next standard filter size, buy step-up ring and bigger filter you may want to use a step-up ring and 67 or 77mm filter. Weights 725 grams so it is a heavy lens, consider using its own lens bag.

Sharp images The image stabilization makes a little bit of noise, but nothing bothersome. Lens is incredibly sharp and pairs well with the Sigma 1.4x extender when you need the extra reach. Haven’t had any problems with it at all. Can’t really comment on the autofocus since I use this primarily for macro video work which is all focused manually. It’s solidly built, my only complaint is the lack of manual control for aperture, but that seems to be pretty common with third-party Canon mount lenses and I knew that going in, so I really can’t deduct for it. Buy with confidence!

A very good 3rd party budget lens that can do a very reasonable job. Had tried out this lens with a Canon 6D and a Canon 7D MII for about a month and am very happy with it for the price. All the lens functions (e.g., OS, AF) work well with both cameras. The images were all very sharp when used as a prime lens. However, when using it as a close-up macro, some images were out of focus or fuzz. Don’t know if it was the OS or the AF issue. But, for less than $700, this lens works really well!

Excellent 105mm Macro Lens The lens renders very sharp macro images without trying to get a couple inches from your subject like you would with a 50mm macro lens. The auto focus works well and quickly, but I tend to use manual focus for most macro photography. The manual focus is smooth and precise. All in all, an excellent macro lens and a great buy.
